Sonic Youth - Death Valley 69, live in 1985

In 1985 Sonic Youth had released Death Valley 69. The single didn’t work for me and so when I went to see them supporting The Jesus & Mary Chain at The Hammersmith Palais, I wasn’t expecting much. They walked onto the stage, turned to each other and blasted a wall of noise, louder, more powerful and archaic than I had ever heard before. It is the only gig that I know of making someone physically sick!

It was all too much for a fellow blogger, Claire Britcher, who had come to see the poptastic Jesus & Mary Chain.

This live clip from the same year may bring back horrible memories for Claire. But it reminds me of how powerful Sonic Youth were and still are.
