Queen - We Will Rock You
When I was growing up my brothers were both mad about Queen and told me how fantastic they were live. How their light show was fantastic and what a stage presence Freddie Mercury had as a front man…. and what a powerful voice. This was at at time when I was into punk and post-punk ethics of do-it-yourself, learn to play as you perform and a dress-down culture to counteract the glam / dress-up stadium rock that had preceded it, something that Queen were most definitely a part of. That said, I did like some of their songs and had bought their second single, Seven Seas Of Rye in 1974.
Queen were formed in 1970 by guitarist Brian May, vocalist Freddie Mercury, and drummer Roger Taylor. Bass guitarist John Deacon joined the band in 1971.
Queen’s popularity peaked between the mid-1970’s and mid-1980’s. Many people would agree they stole the show with a fantastic performance at the Live Aid Concert held at Wembley Stadium on 13 July 1985.
Even though it was pretty uncool to like Queen at school, there was appreciation for the odd song or two. You’re My Best Friend was always a favourite, as was Don’t Stop Me , Now I’m Here and Killer Queen.
On 23 November 1991, in a prepared statement made on his deathbed, Freddie Mercury confirmed that he had AIDS. He died the following day at the age of 45. According to Wikipedia have sold over 300 million copies to date.
Queen have continued to sell albums worldwide even after Freddie Mercury’s death. A resurgence in sales has been caused by Brian May & Roger Taylor performing live once again as Queen (without John Deacon). Queen Tickets are on sale for their 2008 UK Tour.
Though not a song I particularly like, in fact it’s rather annoying, Brian May’s guitar solo and hard-nosed sound was absolutely awesome on the track We Will Rock You, a double A side with the awful We Are The Champions. Even now I love listening to the track, waiting for May’s feedback to start bleeding in. Then he’s off. What a fantastic sound. Shame about the rest of the song!
Here is a rarely seen promotional video for We Will Rock You.
