After the frantic madness of the January Sales and over indulgencies of Christmas food, drink and family tv, what better way to relax and chill-out before you go back to the grind than to listen to last years ‘most relaxing song ever’.

Manchester trio Marconi Union worked with sound therapists to create the soothing tune, which allegedly ’slows breathing and reduces brain activity.‘

Weightless is an right minute track induces sleep with its sustaining rhythm that starts at 60 beats per minute and gradually slows to around 50 bpm.

Sound therapy has been used for thousands of years to help people relax and improve health and well-being. Weightless is ideal for putting on at the end of a stressful day and unwinding.

Here is a just released video of what happened when Tinie Tempah met the street magician Dynamo backstage at his recent gig at the Academy in Manchester.

The video covers a bit of the gig (at 3:35 into the video), but mostly includes some eye popping street magic that has Tinie praising Dynamo as ‘the best magician in the world’. In the video, Dynamo performs tricks like:

-Having Tinie pulling a metal chain through his neck (not for the faint-hearted, that one!) – 1:25

-Making a Panasonic TA1 camera appear inside a beer bottle – 2:10

-Removing Tinie’s sunglasses on his album cover through the CD’s hard plastic – 4:10

Having gained recognition for his songwriting skills in the late sixties, most notably writing the song I’m A Believer that launched the career of The Monkees, Neil Diamond had to wait until 1970 and the release of Cracklin’ Rosie for his own US number one single.

The song taken from the album Tap Root Manuscript also presented Diamond with his personal breakthrough in the UK, where the single peaked at number three in the charts and set the rumours going about what the song was actually about.

The line ‘Cracklin’ Rosie you’re store bought woman’ had many believing that somehow this song was referring to a particular lady of the night or prostitute, but Diamond later enlightened fans with the truth behind the song.

It turned out to be a song about a Rosé wine, but of course no ordinary Rosé, Cracklin’ Rosie was a homemade alcoholic brew made and drunk by a native Canadian tribe.

As usual there are various stories about how Diamond came to write about the homemade brew, some say that the singer actually visited the tribe and the song is about his personal experience, but the story told in the book Neil Diamond: The Solitary Star says that Diamond heard the story from a reporter before writing the song.

Either way the story is that there is a native tribe in Canada whose men outnumber their women. Those single men that were unlucky enough not to have a date at the weekend would gather around the fire drinking Cracklin’ Rosé, which Diamond changed to Cracklin’ Rosie.

Enough of that! Here is Neil Diamond performing Cracklin’ Rosie live in 1970.

Pixies formed in Boston in 1986 and enjoyed moderate success, soon becoming the darlings of the college rock scene and earning cult status world wide for their style of music and are credited along with Dinosaur Jr as the forerunners of the Grunge alternative rock explosion at the start of the nineties.

When the Pixies broke up in 1992 after only six years together their fans were shocked, the grunge era was peaking and the band that started it all was splitting up. The split was very nasty and it seemed unlikely that they would ever get back together again.

Against all the odd’s Pixies reunited in 2004 and despite the odd dispute have remained pretty much together since. In the eleven years that they were apart the Pixies music continued to grow in cult status, probably owing much to Kurt Cobain’s acknowledgement to the debt that Nirvana owed to the band.

Pixies have announced plans of a European tour this October and will be playing shows in the UK in London, Glasgow and Dublin. The tour is being called the Doolittle tour, to mark the twentieth anniversary of the album of the same name. They will play all the tracks from Doolittle throughout the tour, including all singles and related B sides.

The band will perform at the O2 Brixton Academy in London for four nights, two night’s at Dublin’s Olympia and one night in Scotland at the Glasgow SECC. Such is the demand for tickets for Pixies shows that a further night has now been added in Dublin for the 30 September, before the two October dates.

There is no doubt that Pixies have, during their time apart, become something of a phenomenon, one of the great bands of their generation and one of the most influential rock band’s of recent history. Quite why they did not achieve the global success of Nirvana or indeed Pearl Jam is hard to fathom.

In the short time they were originally together the Pixies produced four excellent albums, providing aback catalogue that many band’s would die for, making for some excellent live shows.

Pixies – Gigantic - this is one of the rare tracks that Kim Deal gets to sing.

This track is from Mariannes comeback album Broken English, released in 1979 after a long absence from recording.
Broken English is considered to be her best album and this is a great track with a video directed by Derek Jarman, I believe. She still looked good back then.
