Marianne Faithfull – The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan

A true pop classic in every sense of the word the double A sided single Maggie May/Reason To Believe became the fist single ever to top both the UK and US charts simultaneously.

By the time he released Do Ya Think I’m Sexy in 1978, Stewart was appealing to a new fan base entirely, leaving critics and die hard fans gob smacked but selling more records than ever, appealing to worldwide audience.

To his credit Rod Stewart has maintained his position as one of the most original voices ever and even on his most recent American Songbook offerings, he has won over a new audience of listeners.

Faces – Richmond

After the success of Are Friends Electric? as Tubeway Army, Gary Numan decided to ditch the band and embark on a solo career.  A career that started with the all-time synth pop classic, Cars.

Here are Top Of The Pops appaearances for both Are Friends’ Electric and Cars from 1979.

I’m not much of a fan of The Kinks sixties hits like You Really Got Me and even Waterloo Sunset.  But I love their 1970 classic, Lola.  The lyrics are great, but the sound of Ray Davies’ resonator guitar is beautiful.

The song is about a young man’s sexual encounter with a transvestite in a Soho bar.  The single was taken from the album Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, which was released in June 1970.  Lola reached no.2 in the UK charts and no.9 in the US.
