For those of you that have been to see The Jesus & Mary Chain in the past couple of years and wondered what happened to that perfect archaic live ear-splitting noise, here’s JAMC performing the very wonderful Just Like Honey & Inside Me from their classic debut album, Psycho Candy on Channel 4’s The Tube in 1987, introduced by the gorgeous Paula Yates.

Notice a young Bobby Gillespie on drums who soon after this performance left The Jesus & Mary Chain to concentrate on his own group, Primal Scream.

While Joy Division and New Order were always the most popular and most commercially successful bands on Tony Wilson’s Manchester based FactoryRecords label, I always loved the white funk of A Certain Ratio (ACR), so it was with great anticipation and excitement that I watched them perform live on The Tube on Channel 4 in 1985.

How Wild Party was not a big hit for them, I shall never know.

In the early 1980’s UK tv had three main music programmes – Top Of The Pops, Whistle Test and The Tube.

The Tube went out live on Friday evenings from 5.30 -7.00PM and as well as live performances they also videoed unsigned bands such as The Smiths and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. If my memory serves me well, this video was aired in 1982, the year before The Smiths were signed to Rough Trade and released the song as their second single.
