This is Eddie & The Hot Rods not really sure if they are Rockabilly, Punk or just plain Rock & Roll, but giving it some none the less, excellent!

Stiff Little Fingers were a post-punk punk band with a bundle of Belfast attitude. They started out as a school band called Highway Star, named after a Deep Purple song. They formed Stiff Little Fingers in 1977, and in 1978 found instant success while touring the UK supporting the Tom Robinson Band. In 1979 they released their debut album, Inflammable Material. The album included a brilliant version of a Bob Marley song, Johnny Was.

The song was always a live favourite and was included on the 1980 live Hanx! album.

Sheer pop-punk genius from Swindon’s finest. I had this on clear vinyl in a fold-out sleeve, some sly git nicked it off me. Contains probably the finest anti guitar solo ever!
Suggestions for a more under-rated band?

In 1978 The Clash were probably the most important band of their generation; and with the release of their second album, Give ‘em Enough Rope, had managed to survive punk and move on.

The second album is too often dismissed or criticised for being over produced, rushed and not as good as their debut. Personally, I think its better.

Tommy Gun was one of the singles taken from the album. Here The Clash perform live, as always, on BBC tv in 1978. I remember watching it at the time and thinking it was the best thing I had ever heard The Clash perform. The raw power and aggression omitted from our tiny tv set was overwhelming.

“Bakunin would have loved it.”

The Sex Pistols debut live performance was on Granada TV’s early evening show presented by the late Tony Wilson. This is a powerful performance from before the punk group even had a record contract. A performance which helps dispell the myth that the Sex Pistols couldn’t play. It sounded great live until Sid Vicious replaced Glen Matlock on bass guitar.

Tony Wilson concludes by saying “Bakunin would have loved it.” A reference to Mikhail Bakunin, the Russian Anarchist.

The Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant – Top Of The Pops 1977

After a BBC ban and strong accusations of chart fixing to keep their second single, God Save The Queen, from reaching number 1 in the UK Singles chart, Top Of The Pops showed a pre-recorded video of The Sex Pistols miming to their third and in my opinion most powerful single, Pretty Vacant.

It was perfect; and quite possibly the most stirring tv performance I have ever witnessed. It certainly had a lasting effect on me and many other young teenagers of my generation.

After reforming briefly in 1996 The Sex Pistols played Pretty Vacant live on TOTP2, and though the power of the song lives on, Johnny Rotten didn’t looked anywhere near as cool chic as he did in 1977 with his bright ginger hair and famous Destroy shirt.
